After items are drafted by subject matter experts, each item proceeds through a series of reviews. Such reviews include those by a test development professional to consider adherence to best practices in item writing, an editor to consider style and grammar, and a group of subject matter experts to consider congruence with the exam objectives and accuracy of the item content. With respect to fairness, each of the experts involved in this review process will also carefully consider the language used in each item to avoid potential bias that could negatively impact candidates. The output of a proper review is exam content for which the exam sponsor, subject matter experts, examinees, and other stakeholders can be confident supports the validity of the intended purpose and use of the exam.
