Pre-testing, also called beta testing, pilot testing, or field testing, is a critical element in the test development cycle as it provides an opportunity prior to live testing to verify that the exam is functioning as expected. Pre-testing allows for a review of the performance of individual items/tasks, as well as the exam in its entirety, including: diagnosing potential issues with item difficulty and relationship (correlation) to the other exam items, identifying possible scoring and answer key problems, assessing the appropriateness of the content representation, and determining initial estimates of pass rates and time limits.
